Health promotion embraces actions directed at strengthening the skills and capabilities of individuals and also action directed towards changing social, environmental and economic conditions so as to alleviate their impact on public and individual health.
Health promotion is the process of enabling people to take control over the determinants of their health and thereby improve their health.
At WA Health, the Population Population and Preventive Health Directorate is responsible for health promotion that focuses on:
- reducing tobacco and e-cigarette use
- healthy eating and active living to halt the rise in obesity
- preventing injury and promoting safer communities.
Effective research and evaluation is a vital step in ensuring that the Western Australian community is benefiting from programs funded and managed through the Department of Health and its partners.
