HISWA reports

Multi-resistant organisms

Multi-resistant organisms (MROs) are micro-organisms resistant to multiple antibiotics which makes them difficult to treat. In WA, the MROs of significance are:

  • Candida auris
  • carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPO)
  • methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
  • vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE).

MRO patient notification letters

Information must be provided to patients who are colonised or infected with a MRO, with written notification of their status and an information sheet including how to prevent transmission whilst in hospital and how it is managed once discharged.
