10-year plan to implement digital technologies
Investing in a phased 10-year digitisation of the WA health system has been prioritised to provide people with greater health information, to enable access to innovative, safe and efficient services; and to improve, promote and protect the health of Western Australians.

Investing in analytical capability and real-time reporting
Building systems and supporting all clinicians and policy makers to have better access to the right information in a useable, real-time format will significantly enhance the capacity to evaluate policies, programs and health interventions. It will also assist in targeted planning and effective policy and clinical decision making. 

 Priorities for 2024

  • Complete the WA Health Data Platform to improve system-wide reporting
  • Pilot advanced AI tools including Microsoft 365 CoPilot
  • Provide streamlined access to WA High Performance Computing (HPC) centres to support medical research and innovation.
  • Assess advanced analytics and real-time reporting tools including Microsoft Fabric and develop a change management plan for transitioning from Microsoft Power BI mid-2026.
  • Introduce the Data and Analytics Hub (DAX) in 2024/25 to provide best practice training and self-support for REDCap and Power BI.
  • Create a Data Strategy to enhance data value, improve operations and achieve better patient outcomes through evidence-based decision making.

Achievements

  • Completed the first Wave Information Definition project for the Data Platform supporting State Health Operations Centre (SHOC) decision making and key data requirements, including data to support Patient Transport Coordination Hub (PaTCH), St John Ambulance WA (SJWA), beds, live admission and ED data models.
  • Standardised data modelling for beds creating a unified dataset and source of truth for consistent reporting across the health system.
  • Developed the Paediatric and Neonatal Demand and Access (PANDA) dashboard for real-time statewide management and coordination of paediatric care, as part of the Perth Children’s Hospital Aishwarya Inquiry.
  • Launched an interim statewide Nurse/Midwives Patient Ratio (NMPTR) dashboard, providing visibility into nursing ratios and ward-specific staffing to support recent industrial agreements.
