Upgrades for Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital
Works are now underway to expand the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) emergency department (ED) to support increasing demand for emergency care in the northern suburbs.
The redevelopment of the ED will include dedicated areas for alcohol and other drug-related presentations through a new urgent Critical Care Toxicology Unit, along with:.
- upgraded emergency department entrance, waiting area and triage area
- new urgent critical care toxicology unit
- enhanced observation ward
- enhanced ambulance triage facilities
- fast-track area for ambulant, low-complexity patients
- dedicated 'pitstop area’
- new external covered walkways and entry canopy including a new main SCGH entry canopy.
Additionally, a builder has been appointed to construct a 10-bed pod for the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU), which will enhance ICU capacity.
The pod will be physically separated from the main ICU, allowing it to be isolated and quarantined if required.
Works will be undertaken in a staged approach to minimise service disruptions.
