The Department of Health can confirm that follow up pathology testing carried out in the Bidyadanga and Beagle Bay communities has given an “all clear” COVID-19 result.
Secondary PCR testing shows that some community members do have documented respiratory virus infections – such as the flu and rhinovirus – but not the more virulent COVID-19.
Dr Andrew Robertson, Chief Health Officer, said that Western Australia was on high alert, given COVID-19 was circulating within the community, and that priority would always be given to protecting remote Aboriginal communities.
“We took a precautionary approach based on the information we had at the time, and we acted quickly,” Dr Robertson said.
“Our remote communities will always receive a prioritised public health response, as we need to protect our most vulnerable citizens.
“All initial tests – carried out on a GeneXpert machine indicated a positive result.
“While it is unfortunate for the level of community concern and inconvenience, I would always prefer to react swiftly and take a precautionary approach – rather than regret delayed action.
“I would like to thank the Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Service (KAMS), the Bidyadanga and Beagle Bay communities and all involved in the response in the past few days for your immediate response.
“KAMS took a highly precautionary approach – which was supported by the Department, local stakeholders and community Chief Executives.
“We need to remain vigilant and work together to ensure our most vulnerable community members are protected against this dangerous virus.”
The Department will continue to work with the WA Country Health Service and Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Service on providing support to these communities, based on the past few days and to increase vaccination rates in the community, should COVID-19 present.
