If you plan to bring your partner or family (external site) to reside in Australia on a temporary or permanent basis, the Department of Home Affairs covers your options based on whether you are a visa holder or not, and if you are a visa holder, which visa you have.
Working in Australia, you are required to have a tax file number (TFN) which serves as a personal reference number for tax and superannuation purposes. You can apply for a TFN (external site) for free either online or by paper depending on your circumstances and residency status. If you do not have a valid visa, you cannot apply for a TFN.
MyGov allows you to access government services from one place and is available through secure online access or the official Australian Government app (external site). You create a MyGov account (external site) through their website, then select the services you would like to link to your account. Services include but are not limited to:

- Individual Healthcare Identifiers Service
- Medicare
- My Health Record
- National Cancer Screening Register

- Workforce Australia
Settling into life in a new place, it is important to have resources and spaces to establish a sense of belonging. Some resources and services that support migrants and thriving WA communities include:
- The Office of Multicultural Interests (external site) has the contact details for several ethnic community groups and organisations as well as services that assist new migrants, offering the opportunity to connect with people that have similar backgrounds and experiences moving to a WA and integrating into a new community.
- Multicultural Futures (external site) works to support an inclusive Australian society by offering services and support for settlement and community engagement as well as mental health and wellbeing.
- Playgroup WA (external site) is a resource for families with children aged 0 to 5 that offers several programs and services to connect parents and their young children with others as an opportunity to meet, interact, and play including community playgroups, supported playgroup services, intergenerational activities, school-based playgroups, and mother-baby nurture groups based on your location.
- Your WA Local Government Authority (external site) has an interactive tool to find sports, swimming, barbeques, playgrounds, beaches (and pet friendly beaches), art centres, public libraries, and more!
- The Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries (external site) offers events, insights, training, and networking opportunities to engage in coordinated community activities, volunteering, and community sporting organisations.
