Sale and supply of medicines and poisons by schedule

There are restrictions over who may the sell or supply Scheduled medicines and poisons in Western Australia. These vary according to the Schedule classification of the substance.

Schedule 2 and 3

Schedule 2

Schedule 2 (S2) medicines may only be sold by retail a pharmacy or licenced S2 retailer. An authorised health professional may supply a S2 medicine as part of a consultation with a patient.

Licensed pharmaceutical wholesalers may supply S2 medicines to an authorised health professional or holder of a valid permit or licence.

Schedule 3

Schedule 3 (S3) medicines can only be sold by retail from a pharmacy. An authorised health professional may supply a S3 medicine as part of a consultation with a patient.

Licensed pharmaceutical wholesalers may supply by wholesale Schedule 3 medicines to an authorised health professional or holder of a valid permit or licence.

Schedule 4

Schedule 4 (S4) medicines may only be supplied by a pharmacy dispensing a valid prescription for a patient or agent or animal. An authorised health professional may supply a S4 medicine as part of a consultation with a patient.

Licensed pharmaceutical wholesalers may supply S4 medicines to an authorised health professional or holder of a valid permit or licence. A pharmacist may supply a S4 medicine to an authorised health professional on receipt of a written request.

Schedule 5 and 6

Schedule 5 poisons

Schedule 5 (S5) poisons must be supplied in accordance with the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines (SUSMP) Part 2 (external site). They must not be supplied a person who is apparently under 16 years of age.

Schedule 6 poisons

Schedule 6 (S6) poisons must be supplied in accordance with the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines (SUSMP) Part 2 (external site). They must not be supplied a person who is apparently under 16 years of age.

Schedule 7

Schedule 7 (S7) poisons must be supplied in accordance with the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines (SUSMP) Part 2 (external site). They must not be supplied a person who is apparently under 16 years of age.

S7 poisons must only be sold in accordance with the conditions and restrictions listed in the Medicines and Poisons Act Section 72 Notice relating to Schedule 7 substances.

The retail purchaser must be:

  • a bona fide primary producer
  • the holder of a permit/voucher specifying that poison
  • the holder of a pesticide operator’s licence, specifying that poison.
Schedule 8

Schedule 8 (S8) medicines may only be supplied by a pharmacy dispensing a valid prescription for a patient or agent or animal.

Licensed pharmaceutical wholesalers may supply S8 medicines to an authorised health professional or holder of a valid permit or licence.

A pharmacist may supply a S8 medicine to an authorised health professional on receipt of a written request
