Regional disaster training opportunities

The Disaster Preparedness and Management Directorate (DPMD) are proud to offer a choice of 3 Regional disaster training opportunities to each WACHS region.

These training opportunities are aimed at providing participants with an understanding of how health can prepare for, respond to, and assist in recovery from a disaster.

Regional EmergoTrain System Exercise

This exercise provides regions with an opportunity to assess or practice the regional or hospital disaster plans, or elements thereof.  It also allows EmergoTrain System instructors based in the region to practice their instructor skills.

Exercises can address elements such as:

  • pre-hospital response, including interaction with other emergency services preparing the hospital
  • decanting
  • discharging
  • staffing
  • resourcing
  • patient flow
  • triage
  • command, control and communication.

Participation in these exercises is determined at the regional level.

Regional executive training / Incident Management Team (IMT) course

The regional executive training occurs over 2 days and targets executive, management and admin support who would be required to work within an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). Other agency personnel are also suitable that may be required to perform a liaison role during an incident. Learning outcomes include:

  • Understand regulations and policy related to disaster and major incident requirements
  • Clarify the response change between a health facility incident and a multi-agency major incident
  • Learn the importance of prevention, planning, response & recovery stages of disaster management
  • Become aware of the tools and guides that can assist in the development of incident action & response plans
  • Ensure understanding of the Incident Command Structure (ICS), how it is used within an EOC and interactions between other agencies. EOC’s
  • Improve knowledge of other emergency response services and their involvement in major incidents
  • Consolidate awareness around business continuity
  • Comprehensive understanding of the recovery processes within Health facilities and the local community following a major incident
