Adolescent immunisation campaign toolkit
Protection for everybody
A campaign to promote free recommended vaccines to prevent serious disease for students in year 7 and year 10.
Objectives
The campaign supports the WA Health objective to increase adolescent vaccination rates across the state by aiming to:
- increase awareness of the free immunisations (and the diseases they protect against) delivered under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) to year 7s and year 10s
- increase completion of the VaccinateWA parental consent form for adolescent immunisations in step with the WA Health delivered school-based immunisation clinics delivered in high schools throughout the year.
Key messages
- Vaccines provided during adolescence are free and protect adolescents from contracting serious, vaccine-preventable illnesses.
- Students in years 7 and 10 will be offered these vaccinations via immunisation team visits to their school. Schools will provide details of these visits and parents will need to complete the consent form.
- Consent is required prior to the clinic visit so parents are urged to consent or decline on their child’s behalf.
- Students entering year 7 are offered the HPV immunisation and a diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) booster.
- Students in year 10 can access the meningococcal ACWY vaccine which protects against 4 strains of this rare, life-threatening disease.
- If students miss their vaccine at school, parents are encouraged to get their child immunised at a community pharmacist or community immunisation clinic or at participating GPs, Aboriginal Medical Services (consultation fees may apply).
