Royal Perth Hospital senior registrar Dr Edward Fysh has received a Department of Health/Raine Medical Research Foundation Clinician Research Fellowship to pursue work that should provide new insights into the risks and benefits of performing drainage procedures on patients with pleural effusion – a condition in which fluid accumulates in the cavity surrounding the lungs.
More than 60 per cent of intensive care patients are affected by pleural effusions.
Procedures to drain fluid from the lungs can be risky. A goal of Dr Fysh’s project will be to identify factors that could help medical staff predict which patients are most likely to benefit from these procedures.
Now in its third year, the fellowship program is an alliance between the Department of Health and Raine Medical Research Foundation that provides funding for up to three years and can be up to $150,000 a year, depending on the extent of the research proposal and the applicant’s salary.
Other recipients of Clinician Research Fellowships for Round 3 included:
- Dr Kwok-Ming Ho; Intensive care specialist, Royal Perth Hospital
- Ulrich Steinwandel; Registered nurse, Fremantle Hospital
- Dr Tom Snelling; Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Princess Margaret Hospital
