Fellowships to support WA's nurses and midwives
Western Australian nurses and midwives are being encouraged to apply for one of six fellowships worth up to $20,000 each.
The fellowships can be used to help nurses and midwives visit and learn from other healthcare sites, fund a practice improvement or small research project or support them to take time off work to complete their masters or PhD thesis.
Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer Catherine Stoddart said nurses and midwives played an integral part in delivering quality health care.
"Western Australia's 35,000 nurses and midwives make up the largest workforce in health and are the backbone of the health system," Ms Stoddart said.
"These fellowships will go a long way to helping our nurses and midwives achieve their personal and professional goals.
"WA Health is committed to supporting and promoting its nurses and midwives by not only offering fellowships, but also a range of professional development initiatives, scholarships and award events."
The six nursing and midwifery fellowships are:
- Aboriginal Health
- Advancing the Midwifery Profession (previously known as Midwifery)
- Advancing the Nursing Profession (previously known as Helen Bailey)
- Global Health (previously known as International Outreach)
- Nursing and Midwifery Leadership (previously known as Margaret J Watson)
- Responding to Major Events / Disruptions (previously known as Bali Memorial)
Ms Stoddart also encouraged Western Australians to celebrate the State's midwives and nurses in the lead up to this year's International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day.
Celebrated respectively on 5 May and 12 May each year, the days provide an opportunity to recognise the outstanding work of WA nurses and midwives.
"Our nurses and midwives have a fantastic reputation at home, interstate and abroad," Ms Stoddart said.
"It's important to have days like these where we acknowledge and thank them all for their hard work."
Applications for the nursing and midwifery fellowships open on 9 May 2012 and close on 20 June 2012. To apply visit the Nursing and Midwifery Office website.
